When most people imagine Hong Kong, they see skyscrapers piercing the sky, neon lights reflecting on busy streets, and ferries crossing Victoria Harbour. Yet hidden in the New Territories lies a place that feels worlds apart — Lau Fau Shan. Nestled among green mountains and calm waters, it sits opposite Shenzhen, quietly reminding us that Hong Kong is more than just a city of glass and steel.
We first came here with a simple goal: to fish. What began as a casual weekend experiment soon grew into a diary of patience, learning, and discovery.
Visit 1: Humble Beginnings
Our first attempt was almost comical. We cast our lines with enthusiasm but caught nothing. We didn’t know how deep to set the float, how much bait to use, or when to strike. Around us, seasoned anglers pulled fish from the water while our rods stayed still. Yet, the mountain breeze and the quiet rhythm of the water made the day worthwhile. We left with empty buckets but full hearts, promising ourselves we would return.
Visit 2: Learning by Watching
Determined to improve, we spent the next trip observing others. We noticed how experienced anglers kept their bait small and fresh, how they adjusted their floats constantly, and how they waited with infinite patience. Copying their methods, we finally felt the thrill of a bite. A couple of small fish landed in our bucket, and though they were modest in size, the joy was immense.
Visit 3 & so on : Finding the Rhythm
By the third visit, we began to understand the language of the float. A slow dip meant one thing, a sharp tug another. Timing became everything — too early or too late, and the fish slipped away. We also learned to keep our bait spot consistent, drawing fish to gather in one place. Slowly, our catches grew, and so did our confidence.
The Big Day: Five Kilos!
After several weekends, everything clicked. The pond seemed alive with fish, and our rods bent again and again. By the end of the day, we had caught nearly five kilos — Pacu, Carp, Tilapia, Mud Carp, Grass Carp. The sun burned our skin, our arms ached, but our spirits soared. That day, Lau Fau Shan gave us more than fish; it gave us a memory etched forever.
Lessons from the Water
Fishing here taught us more than technique.
Patience beats speed.
Observation is the best teacher.
Small improvements add up.
The real prize is peace with family and friends outdoors.
